The Great Social Media Purge & Other Digital Detours: What Happens When You Press “Delete”?
Alright, my fellow digital denizens and online enthusiasts, let’s talk about something that’s probably giving you mild anxiety right now – social media. Specifically, your own, and the sometimes-chaotic mess it can become. We’re often told that more is more – post more, engage more, be everywhere online. But what if I told you that sometimes, the best move you can make for your business is to press that big red “delete” button? And no, I haven’t completely lost my mind – though after 25 years in the ever-evolving digital world, that’s a distinct possibility.
We’ve been trained to think that social media is the holy grail, the magical key to success. But like a perfectly brewed cup of masala chai, it’s not about the quantity, it’s about the quality and the intention behind it. Sometimes we just need to make space for something new by letting go of things that don’t serve us anymore. And the truth, my friends, is that sometimes that means hitting delete.
I’ve seen so many businesses pouring their time and energy into social media with little to show for it, because they’ve fallen victim to the belief that more is better. More posts, more followers, more likes… but what about real engagement, real results?
So, let me tell you about two very different folks who took the plunge and did something a little, well, unconventional with their social media presence.
Story #1: The Curious Case of the Contentious Curry, “Chitra’s Chaat House”
First, we have Chitra, the owner of “Chitra’s Chaat House,” a small but mighty eatery known for her fiery and flavor-packed street food. Chitra was all over social media. She was posting daily photos of her pani puri, uploading endless videos of her dahi bhalla being made, and running every contest imaginable. Yet, despite her tireless efforts, her online presence wasn’t really translating into customers walking through her door, and sales were pretty lukewarm.
She was busy, busy, busy, and she was stressed. She kept wondering why after all that effort, she was not seeing a return. One day, after getting lost in the chaos of her feed, she called me, more confused than a goat in a car park.
So, we started by doing something completely unexpected: we deleted all of her social media posts, every single one, like we were deleting bad memories. And then, we started again, but this time with a strategy. We focused on creating high quality, engaging content, highlighting her unique recipes, and authentic stories and behind-the-scenes, instead of chasing the latest trend.
It was a complete social media reset, and the results were surprising. By focusing on quality over quantity, and being more strategic with her approach, Chitra saw a huge increase in engagement, more website traffic, and finally, more customers showing up to taste her sensational street food.
Story #2: The Baffling Boutiques of “Sanskriti Styles”
Then there’s Anika, owner of “Sanskriti Styles,” a chic online boutique specializing in handcrafted Indian clothing. Anika’s feed was beautifully curated, filled with flawless models and glossy photos, but her engagement was practically nonexistent. She was buying followers, she was creating posts for the sake of it, but she was talking to no-one.
Anika was convinced that her issue was a lack of presence – she simply needed to “be more visible.” She was constantly trying to optimize her posts and use hashtags that she thought were “relevant”, but her efforts were getting her nowhere. She kept throwing money at social media with very little to show for it.
One day, after I’d scrolled through her seemingly perfect, but utterly unengaging feed, I suggested she do something radical, she had to throw everything away. We deleted all of her posts, and then we went one step further: we decided to actually listen to her customers. We engaged in genuine conversations, asked for feedback, and built her social media around their needs, and what they wanted to see.
This weird trick led her to completely transform her social media – she stopped posting perfect pictures, and she started sharing the process, the stories, and the human aspect of her brand. She made her account real, not manufactured. And it was this that created a genuine and loyal community of customers who were desperate to be involved and shop her products.
The Unexpected Power of Deleting (And Starting Over)
So, what do these seemingly crazy stories tell us? That sometimes the most impactful thing you can do is to hit the delete button. It’s about being willing to question everything, about having the courage to let go of what’s not working and embracing a new way forward. It’s about creating space for new ideas, more strategic approaches and better solutions.
You might be so caught up in the social media hamster wheel that you’ve lost sight of what actually works for your brand.
