The Ghostly Blog Post & Other Content Catastrophes: The Brutal Truth About Why No One is Reading Your Stuff (And How to Finally Get Seen!)

Alright, my fellow content creators and digital storytellers, let’s have an uncomfortable chat about something that probably keeps you up at night: your content. Yes, your content.

You’re pouring your heart and soul into blog posts, crafting compelling copy, and maybe even creating those trendy little videos, but are people actually reading it? After 25 years of navigating the ever-chaotic world of content, I’ve learned a brutal truth: sometimes, no matter how much effort you put in, your content might as well be invisible.

And look, I’m not here to crush your dreams; I’m here to help you make them a reality, but sometimes it’s necessary to have some “tough love”.

We’re often told to “create great content,” as if that’s the magic bullet. But, the truth is that great content alone isn’t enough. Sometimes, the problem isn’t what you’re saying, but how you’re saying it, who you’re saying it to, and if anyone is actually listening. It’s time to face the music – your content might be falling on deaf ears, and it’s time to figure out why.

I’ve seen countless businesses pouring their time and money into content marketing, only to be met with crickets, tumbleweeds, and the deafening silence of unread blog posts. It’s like throwing a lavish party and having no guests show up – the effort is there, the intention is good, but the impact is nonexistent.

So, let me share with you two very different situations where content was practically invisible, and the “brutal truth” that finally helped these folks get noticed. And yes, it might hurt a little, but trust me, it’ll be worth it.

Story #1: The Ghostly Blog Post of “Anjali’s Artisan Antiques”

First up, we have Anjali, owner of “Anjali’s Artisan Antiques,” a small but beautiful online store selling handcrafted antiques. Anjali was a gifted writer, crafting blog posts that were packed with history, detail, and a whole lot of heart. She was publishing them regularly, promoting them on her social media channels and emailing them to her list. But the problem was that nobody seemed to be reading them.

She was wondering why her content wasn’t working. She thought the problem was her writing, or maybe she needed better design, or better photography, but it wasn’t any of that. She was putting a ton of effort and energy, but for what?

One day, after what I believe was my tenth attempt at reading one of her posts (they were just so long), I realized the problem: her content was beautiful, but it was also entirely self-serving. It was all about her and her antiques, with very little value for her readers. She was writing from her own lens, she wasn’t thinking about her audience.

The fix was simple: we transformed her content to focus on the needs and interests of her readers, by offering helpful tips and advice, and telling stories that resonated with her audience. She wasn’t just selling antiques; she was offering a journey through time, a connection to history, and valuable insights that were actually interesting and useful. The result? People started actually reading her posts, her traffic increased, and her sales started to grow as a result.

Story #2: The Unseen Videos of “Bhavna’s Bollywood Beats”

Then there’s Bhavna, owner of “Bhavna’s Bollywood Beats,” a YouTube channel specializing in dance tutorials. Bhavna was talented, passionate, and highly skilled in all the latest Bollywood dance moves. She was creating countless videos, choreographing complex routines, and promoting them on all of her social media channels.

But despite her hard work, her videos were getting as much attention as a dahi puri in a gulab jamun shop – nobody was noticing her. She started to think that she wasn’t good enough, maybe she needed better lighting, better editing, and better music, but that wasn’t it at all.

One day, after spending way too long trying to learn one of her intricate dance routines (my coordination is less than stellar, let me tell you!), I realized her problem: her videos were too complex, too lengthy, and entirely intimidating to her average viewer. She was so focused on her own skill and her own agenda, she completely missed what her audience was looking for.

The fix, which was a bit brutal to hear for her, was this: stop trying to impress people and start helping them. She started creating beginner-friendly tutorials, focusing on simple steps, providing clear explanations, and creating content that was accessible to all, regardless of their skill level. Her views shot up, her engagement skyrocketed, and her channel became a go-to resource for anyone interested in Bollywood dance.

The Brutal Truth: It’s Not About You (It’s About Them)

So what do these stories of ghostly blog posts and unseen videos teach us? That your content isn’t about you. It’s about your audience. You might be creating amazing stuff, but if it’s not valuable, engaging, and relevant to your target audience, nobody’s going to read, watch, or care about it.

You might be so focused on your own brand, your own product, or your own message, that you’ve forgotten to connect with your audience on a human level. And that’s why your content is falling on deaf ears.

That’s where I come in – to help you uncover the brutal truths about your content strategy, and help you create content that not only gets noticed but also converts.
