It would have crossed your mind, at one time of the other, if you could possibly work from home and avoid the tormenting commute to and from office. The 60-second commute to work, the unavoidable spite and politics, the mind games played out in corporate board rooms and sometimes even the lack of simple appreciation or giving credit when it is due, make many people think about leaving all this for good. They would give away anything to be able to work for themselves, if they assumed that they themselves were smart.

However, you need to be able to gauge for yourself if you can really pull it off. Not everyone is suited to do this and it takes a certain type of personality, mind-set and attitude to be able walk on your own. You need to be aware of the fact that there would be no place for complacency and there would be no more security of a nice, juicy paycheck. There might be a possibility that you would have to start alone and remain so, for a long time. There would be a dearth of people called colleagues and there would be no perks anymore. You pay all your bills for yourself and you would have to wander around in your own vehicle.

Now that was just the beginning. You would have to start looking around for clients and land your first winning client. You would not stop there and hence, your marketing efforts will have to rage on. There might be a possibility of a few clients taking up too much of your time and you need to play the delicate balancing act. You need to be able to decide which clients you’d want to work for and when and how frequently. You’ll have to stomach a certain degree of uncertainty and also spend money not known when and where your next payment is going to come in from and you also will have to live with the fact that your in-flow would be rickety, interrupted, irregular and unreliable.

Freelancing is working hard. It isn’t very difficult from working some place good. Only, you work for yourself and it somehow feels good.
