Why It Makes Good Business Sense To Look After Your Employees
A huge chunk of money is lost annually on the seemingly ‘silly’ reason, employee absenteeism. It’s one of the biggest financial drainers for any business, one of the most underestimated problems and ironically it is the easiest to fix. A happy employee makes a good employee. It’s as simple as that. Tension and stress, lack of enough leisure time, and emotional problems that arise due to the difficulty in balancing home and office are some of the major causes for poor productivity and turn out in employees. Most of a person’s waking hours, and hence life are spent at the workplace.Hence, it is of extreme importance to ensure that the workplace environment is conducive to their peace of mind and it contributes to the overall well being and health of the employees.
Most major corporations have already put such policies that look after their employees, into practice. From ensuring that the physical environment of the office offers ample scope for general good health ( good ventilation systems, ergonomic furniture etc.) to seeing that that the employees have enough stress busting, leisure activities(Sports and games, books etc.), today’s company’s are really taking employee health seriously. A healthy, happy employee is going to be much more enthusiastic about coming to work and his/her productivity and in some cases even creativity, will be much higher. Also, the cycle of maintaining a good work environment will continue and your business will simply flourish.
Here are some good ways to look after and encourage your employees:
1) Ensure that there are enough health and recreation facilities. These allow stressed employees to blow off some steam, thus ensuring that their productivity never slacks.
2) Formulate an effective health plan/scheme for your employees.
3) Try to look after not just their physical health, but mental and spiritual health. A lot of corporations today organize meditation sessions for their employees which in my opinion can be phenomenally beneficial.
4) Make the workplace as fun as you can without taking away the seriousness of work itself. Try using bright, cheerful colours; funny, humorous motivational posters and generally nice surroundings. This will inspire employees to come to work everyday.
