A countless number of business are started by eager, enthusiastic and determined individuals every day but only a handful survive and a tiny percentage of that handful really hit upon success. So,what is it that separates these success stories from the failures? Is entrepreneurship an inborn gift? Or is effective entrepreneurship a skill that can be learnt or acquired with time and practice?
To answer these questions, first let’s take a look at what the word entrepreneurship means. According to Wikipedia, An entrepreneur is a person who has possession of an enterprise, or venture, and assumes significant accountability for the inherent risks and the outcome. He/she is an ambitious leader who combines land, labor, and capital to often create and market new goods or services. The process followed by an entrepreneur is called entrepreneurship.
In simple terms it means anyone with the confidence and gumption to pool in their resources to start a venture with the aim of making money through it,is an entrepreneur. Sounds easy enough. Then what could possibly be the undoing of so many entrepreneurs?
I feel it’s the skills that an entrepreneur needs to have or maybe even develop; skills which can’t be taught to you in a business school or learnt from self help books, that spell the difference between success and failure. Skills like the ability to trust your instinct and take a risk despite common opinion. The ability to not let any number of failures stop you or even get to you. The ability to always, and always remember why you got into this business when you sometimes feel that everything is working against you, and the ability to derive countless reserves of strength, grit and determination from that sole reason. This is what separates the average entrepreneurs from the Richard Bransons and the Donald Trumps. It basically comes down to great strength of mind and will power as tough as steel.
You will be rewarded for your work. It’s the law of nature. I don’t think anybody can take success away from you if you worked towards it. Similarly you cannot achieve success if you don’t work hard for it. Short cuts do not exist.
Entrepreneurship is not a talent or a gift. It is a skill. A skill which can be acquired by anyone who wishes to acquire it. Anyone determined enough to acquire it. Entrepreneurs are definitely not made in heaven, they are made right here on earth.
