But I just love the Pareto’s 80/20 principle. It tells me precisely this: over 80% of those who are on social media still don’t know why they do what they do and as to how to use social media for their benefit.

Only 20% of users have mastered the art of unleashing social media for their benefit. How exactly did they do it? What are their secrets? Here goes:

Are you even listening?

If you step into a forum, you know what the first thing that hits you? Someone would have put up a rather bloated, largish soft sell pitch. They talk, talk and do more talking — just as we all tend to do offline(so, I am really not surprised). Totally the wrong way to go about it. You should be listening actively; asking more questions and engaging your customers in a meaningful discussion.

You don’t have to be everywhere

Most marketers and individual business owners tend to think that every new social media site must be visited. They are under the impression that you need to sign-up and have a profile almost everywhere. The good news is that you don’t need to be everywhere; you just need to make an impact wherever you go.

Monitor and analyze; be on top of metrics

Yes, even your casual social media has metrics for you to frown upon. There is touch-point analysis, market position, Brand health, growth, profits, and verification of all these above mentioned metrics. Are you on top of your numbers? How well can you put your finger and claim that you know what you are getting out of your social media strategy?
