Your business won’t grow by even a single dollar just because you have profiles up on facebook, myspace and twitter. You wouldn’t land any swashbuckling business deals or get some superb clients. Nothing ever happens there but talk. You do have some random business coming your way but that should lead you to believe that social media can pay your bills. Sad truth is that it won’t.
Social media sites are full of kids, teenagers, time-wasters and random appreciation seeking, desperate chatter-boxes. It isn’t where you would get business from, you might probably get a word of appreciation like ” wow, great site!” or ” I have bookmarked your site for future reference; I am sure I will need to look into this later”. Yeah right! They will look into it after 6 years when they move on, graduate, get a job,and finally get frustrated.
You don’t have that kind of time.
I am not saying that social media is an utter waste of time; but if you spend inordinate amount of time there, you are looking catch dolphins in that tank you got build in your back-yard.
This is not to say that there are no places where you – as a savvy and enterprising business owner — can look to communicate, contribute and prosper. You can use social media websites like twitter and many more that have sprouted up as a platform for open communication with your customers, vendors, potential customers, media and everyone else who has something to do with your business.
I had always felt that twitter is a waste of time. Instead of spending time improving your skills, seeking new clients and working on ways to make your business better, you spend all your time reading other blogs and throwing those links for your followers to read? You spend time “socializing”, “bookmarking” and “Sharing”?
If there is a need for it, do it; but not because the hype comes calling and distracts you from what you were supposed to do.
