Working in a target oriented manner is an extremely efficient way of working. Working towards a fixed goal adds a sense of relevance and importance to a job thus spurring the worker forward towards satisfactory completion. Also the sense of triumph when the goal is met with acts as a morale booster encouraging people to increase their efficiency. While most business owners definitely do employ this mode of work, I feel that the actual task of ‘setting the priority’ often gets neglected. This is could be fatal to the business as you need your priorities to be stable and clear not vague or indistinct as that would literally be like working aimlessly. Aimless work is the worst way to drain your resources. To avoid this awful pitfall, here are a few simple ideas that you can utilize while prioritizing your work.
1) Keep a written record: It is very important for you to make a list of your priorities and refer to the list every once in a while. You list could be electronic, paper based or computer based. Do not try to keep a mental of track of your list as you are bound to forget some small, crucial details. Also, keep adding to your list or improving and modifying it as your work progresses.
2) Push tasks: Don’t start off with a task that seems huge if its deadline is some time away. Tackle the task that needs to be done first and deal with larger ones in your spare time. This way you will never miss a deadline.
3) Tag your tasks: Tag your takes with words like urgent, important, small, complex etc. This will simplify your list and make the reference process much faster and easier.
4) Be realistic: Remember that you are not superman, you cannot do everything all the time. Also you have to provide allowance for delays, errors etc. Take the opinion of your advisors and your core team and set realistic targets.
5) Check for links: See if your tasks are interlinked. Sometimes you may start on a task and realize that you should have completed a previous one for the next step in the one you are currently working on. This means wasted time and effort and it will also throw your time management into disarray. So link your tasks together and work on them in a sequential manner.
After you make a good priority list and follow it through you will notice that your productivity will gradually start increasing. This is due to the fact prioritization of your work has increased the efficiency of your entire team by a significant amount and clearly points to a steady increase in profitability.
