Linked In is, needless to say, an incredible resource when it comes to networking, brand building, hiring new talent and even generating leads. However, I can be sure about the fact that your profile is currently just sitting idle doing nothing (I know because I am guilty of it myself).
Linked In has more under its hood that what seems to be. Here is what I noticed about it:
- InMails are more effective that direct mail or even email marketing: The underlying reason is obviously the trust factor. People you connect to on Linked In are going to be more receptive to what you say and do. Further, Linked In is all about business networking so everyone on Linked In is already prepared to open-up and connect with each other. This is way beyond what direct mail or mainstream advertising can do.
- Talent Acquisition is made easy: If you are like me, you would have realized how difficult it is to acquire great talent for the benefit of your business. Linked In However, makes it very easy for you to find human resources just by requiring you to post your requirements right there for your network to see. Not only that, Linked also allows you keep a company page or business page through Linked In Talent Advantage and Linked In recruiter which can have some interesting details about your requirements. You could even go “pro” and have more features that could suit your hiring needs well.
- Put trust first, sell later: An underlying thread on Linked In (or on any other serious social networking site) is that you must first establish yourself. It isn’t going to happen in a day or even in a few months. Plenty of time and effort has to be thrown in for good, generous measure before you see any results.
Keep working on your networking efforts at Linked In — you will be duly rewarded. Tony Karrer has a very informative post on all things Linked In. I am sure you will have a lot to learn from there.

Nicely written! LinkedIn will soon become the most effective way of building your professional career and creating a personal brand. However, one will have to invest time in learning the effectiveness of this site and ways to use it properly.
By the way, I am new to LinkedIn too and have found this resource quite useful. It is a new book called “How to REALLY use LinkedIn” by networking expert Jan Vermeiren. Check it out, you can find a free lite version at http://www.how-to-really-use-linkedin.com/
