Joe is a director of a training company and is usually busy delivering training programs to companies. As a part of his daily schedule, he also spends time finding new clients each day. In fact, he is so intent on growing his company that he also hired a young and enthusiastic team of sales people. His young business development team is literally on a roll– it brings in business consistently and regularly.
The situation above is one which every company wants to see. More ofthen than not, it happens too. But something kills it immediately. Can you guess what it is?
The inaction on the part of the business owner. You see, the entrepreneur Joe in the situation above just cannot learn to let go; he doesn’t allow his staff to send out proposals directly. Instead he insists on meeting each of these training clients sourced and sending quotes and proposals all on his own (instead of letting each of his sales persons do it). Can you imagine how much this is costing Joe’s company in terms of time lost, opportunity cost, loss of morale and confidence of his sales staff, etc?
This is a typical small business scenario. Entrepreneurs just won’t let go; they don’t trust their staff. They want to be a part of everything; which is poor delegation.
As an entrepreneur, you must be the leading example of quick execution. You must set an example for following protocol, exempllary leadership, assertiveness and the ability to get things done. You must learn to let your employees work the way want so long as they produce results.
Are you guilty of not letting go? How did you feel when your boss insists on watching over your shoulder and Interfering in your work? Please write your feelings and thoughts on the comments here.
