Have you heard about twitter? Do you have an account there? How many followers do you have?

You just can’t avoid these questions being thrown at you now-a-days: it has become maniacal, to say the least. Lots of so called “experts” say various things and spread information about how to use twitter to leverage your business and boost your bottom line. Most of what you hear is B.S.
Here’s what should matter:
- Most experts tout the express need to have as many followers as possible following you on your twitter account. I don’t say it isn’t important to have followers, but that isn’t important all by itself. It is only a means to a destination. You won’t earn money by having 50,000 followers on your list. You will make money only when something gets sold – a product or a service or both. You will need sales to make money and not followers. So, don’t look to be a church service while you tweet. Just provide value while you can and sell the rest of the time.
- No one is going to pay for your lunch tomorrow afternoon just because you are really very popular on twitter and with your twitter account literally bursting at its seams. It isn’t important at all. Like mentioned above, only sales can make you money. So, don’t waste your time being Mr. Popular out there.
- Remember that you messages with accompanying links can only be seen by your followers and not everyone. So, in spite of the “follower” bashing above, having adequate number of interested, potential followers is important indeed. However, you must understand that followers can’t be bribed, poached or brought. They can only join when you provide value. So think of how you built your mailing list (you are building a mailing list, aren’t you?) – give something of value and capture their patronage.
